the San Marino Unified School District is now using a standards-based grading system in this news learning comes first standards-based learning cycle includes four elements instructing assessing and Reporting  let's take a closer look at standards-based grading and Reporting standards-based grading Focus Sun specific grade level standards students need the master by the end of the school year and the progression and growth of learning overtime homework effort in behavior in a separate section of the report card  traditional letter grades average academic work and include other factors such as behave work habits and homework to determine a grade  the advantage of a standards-based system is it grades reflect a specific information what is student has learned including areas of strengths and needs here's another way of thinking about this concept  returned just had a complete physical exam for Witch Doctor A or B would you rather receive your results  dr. Sense a standards-based way of creating in reporting because it focuses on specifics rather than vague General labels zimorino's standards-based grading system is a numerical system ranging from 1 to 4 for grades K through 5th  so what are the numbers mean  let's use another analogy and pretend that making a cupcake is a learning if a student has been caught the recipe and given the materials to make cupcakes but doesn't apply the knowledge and is not able to use the materials correctly that would be rated A1 this student shows minimal achievement of the standard and needs more time experiences and intervention from the chef if the student has been taught the recipe and has the materials to make cupcakes but is not able to do it independently needs assistance from the chef or needs more practice weather are so many steps in making the cupcake that the student is able to get through all of them then the student will receive at 2 the student is developing the skills needed to ask for basic understanding of the grade level standard but it's not quite there yet if the student had hot the recipe has all the materials and can successfully and independently make the cupcakes than this student shows proficiency I will receive a 3 the student demonstrates solid acceptable achievement and understands the standard level 3 is the level that shows proficiency is it goal for all students to each by the end of the school year what is student knows how to successfully and independently make cupcakes but decides to do something pletely different with the cupcake recipe extending and expanding what is expected or taught than this student will receive a for it is not common to have many forests unless the student is consistently and independently demonstrating in-depth understanding and exceeding required performance and understanding of this above and beyond what is taught or expected  now many times the standard on the report card may include several related standards in order first Teresa grade of a 3 all the related standards need to be mastered you can think of it this way what a person is studying get their pilot's license through a many different parts of flying they must successfully complete to demonstrate mastery  they need to show that they can successfully do take offs flying navigation and Landing but if a person is learned and mastered the first three but hasn't learned how to successfully land the plane than that I would not receive their pilot's license  all parts of the standard need to be met with proficiency before student receive put three on the report card  a x a student may receive a to on his report card because he's mastered some but not all elements of the standard what's up X some but not all of the elements of the standard were taught so again the student will receive it too  San Marino Elementary Schools shut up on a trimester school year at the end of trimester 1 and trimester to students and parents will receive a report on the progress the student has been making Ford learning end-of-the-year grade level standards the trimester 3 report card will show the level of understanding a student is made in learning that use grade level entrance  what's the first and second trimester reports are really progress reports on how a student is doing in a cheating end-of-the-year standards different way of thinking about report cards since traditionally report cards begin with new averaging of grades occurring each trimester the way of thinking about grading reporting would be similar to a student reading three separate races throughout the school year with different requirements to rain and expectations with the just having no connection to each other each trimester represented the end of learning for that time.  In a standards-based grading and Reporting System don't win three different unrelated races but rather One race reporting of grades is based on students learning and meeting standards by the end of the school year this way students have more time to learn practice and master grade level expectations and standards  since the how to make goal is to get students to learn standards by the end of the year the trimester 1 and trimester 2 grades are reflection of the students progress and perform to that point in the school year think of trimester one and two grades representing the water stations during a long race at the water the runners check their pulses rehydrate and reflect on how they're doing so far and the pace they need to continue to race the trimester 1 and 2 cards are really progress reports on what and how was doing his learning  progress reports provide teachers parents and students the Opera need to check how the student is doing in achieving the ultimate goal of meeting great level standards by the end of the school year a report card should not only inform students and parents about what the student is able to know in due but also how the student is learning a specific section of the report entitled characteristics that support learning focuses on a student's learning in classroom traits including Behavior effort and social skills these are important characteristics that contribute to a student's success in school they include self-directed learner mistreats responsibility for own learning  quality producer produces quality performances and products  collaborative worker well with others responsible engaged citizen demonstrates responsibility complex thinker demonstrates critical thinking and problem-solving strategies  the characteristics that support learning section uses for symbols for creating each of these the e means the student consistently demonstrates exemplary characteristics and exceeds expectations of the characteristics all or most of the time the I means the student independently it consistently demonstrates the characteristics the old means the student occasionally demonstrates the characteristics ask meets the student seldom or never demonstrates the characteristics learning comes first in a standards-based system San Marino unified is excited to now be able to share specific information not only about what students have been learning but also on the characteristics that support they're learning  our standards-based report card shows the progress each student is making toward the end of your expectations and provides opportunities for students and teachers to reflect on the individual strengths and needs of each student
